Heroes & Heroines

Unconsciously we all have a standard by which we measure other men, and if we examine closely we find that this standard is a very simple one, and is this: we admire them, we envy them, for great qualities we ourselves lack. Hero worship consists in just that. Our heroes are men who do things which we recognize, with regret, and sometimes with a secret shame, that we cannot do. We find not much in ourselves to admire, we are always privately wanting to be like somebody else. If everybody was satisfied with himself, there would be no heroes.
~Mark Twain

How true…

Growing up, one of my very favourite English language books is “Heroes & Heroines”. The heroic characters depicted in this book were all Caucasians, mostly Americans. Fortunately enough for me, I grew up knowing and admiring the paths of many non-Caucasian heroes. One of the advantages of being a Chinese Malaysian.

Account Closed

I have been working on closing a no longer necessary bank account since June this year. Today, I received the confirmation of closure. Why so long, you ask? You see, I was dealing with this matter remotely and had to adhere to Sabahan time and mode. Phew… at least it is over now. Financial simplification is the way to go.

Malaysia Day

Today is Malaysia Day. I am spending (not celebrating) this day in Kentucky with two other Malaysians, my parents. 😉

On the theme of not celebrating, we went out for a Korean dinner. My goat stew was simply delicious. After dinner, we went to drink some beers at a local brewery pub known as 3rd Turn Brewing.

Resting Places

We went to visit grandma’s resting place at the Catholic cemetery this afternoon. We brought flowers and spent a few moments in our own quiet thoughts and memories.

Imagine my surprise when we later found my Uncle Francis’s grave, not too far from grandma’s. I was mentally drained after discovering the graves of Father Chi, Father Tung, and Father Clementi.

My goodness, what an afternoon…

Haircut

Went to two banks to settle some matters. Then, mom and I went to get our hair washed at our go to salon in Kota Kinabalu. I finally got my much needed haircut. Even the hairstylist commented that it has been a while since he cut my hair. 😛

Set Them Free

This morning, my parents flew back to Lahad Datu with the tickets I bought online. They have been unusually enthusiastic and talkative since then. D and I had to laugh when the two walked off without even a glance back to us at the airport.

With the parents heading back home, the two of us went to the well known Gaya Street Sunday Market. After that, we went to our favourite mall to cool down. A slow walk back to the apartment made up the rest of today’s walking quota.  ðŸ™‚

Taxing Taxis

Coming from a third world country, I have always accepted taxi services as an important part of the Malaysian society. It is the occasional unethical and unruly drivers which I cannot stand.

Thus, we tried an app known as Grab for the first time today. D and I were torned between our hate for the uber-ishness of this system, but can’t help loving the ease of use, the low cost and the friendly drivers we have met so far.

Passports

Today, my parents renewed their Malaysian passports. With nine more months before expiry, they decided that it is best to have these renewed while they are back home. The process went smoothly and both received their new passports within the hour. These are good for the next five and a half years.
